Basic Characteristics

The insects have their basic characteritics, such as body structure: head, thorax and abdomen; legs and wings: six legs, and many species have one or two pairs of wings; exoskeleton: made if chitin, providing protection and suport; antennae: used for sensing the environment (touch, smell and temperatura); and metamorphosis: many insects undergo complete (egg – larva – pupa – adult) or incomplete (egg – nymph – adult) metamorphosis.

Common Types of Insects

The most common types of insects include beetles (ladybugs, fireflies), butterflies and moths, bees, wasps, ants, flies and mosquitoes, grasshoppers and crickets, dragonflies and termites.

Signs of Insect Infestation:

Droppings:

Insect droppings can be a major indicator. Cockroaches leave small, dark droppings, while ants leave trails of tiny brownish specks.

Visisble Insects:

Seeing insects crawling around your home, especially in places like the kitchen, bathroom, or near trash, is a clear sign. Look for ants, cockroaches, flies, or even tiny pests like bedbugs.

Nesting materials:

You might find insect eggs, webs, or nests in hidden corners, basements, attics, or along walls. For example, spiders make webs, while moths might leave cocoons or larvae.

Sounds:

Insects like termites can make tapping sounds, especially when they are feeding on wood. Also, some insects, like crickets, make noises that might clue you into their presence.

Damage to Property:

Many insects, like termites, carpenter ants, or moths, can damage furniture, wood, or clothing. Look for holes, tunneling, or fraying in materials.

Unpleasant Odors:

Some pests, like cockroaches, emit a strong, musty smell, or even a more pungent, unpleasant odor if the infestation is large.

Increased Activity in Certain Areas:

If you notice an unusual concentration of insects in one part of your home, especially around food sources or trash cans, it could indicate an infestation.

Bite Marks or Skin Irritations:

If you or family members develop unexplained rashes or bite marks, especially at night, it might be from bedbugs, fleas, or other biting insects.
