Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most resilient and adaptable pests, thriving in a variety of environments, specially warm and moist places. Cockroaches are insects belonging to the order Blattodea, and have been around for over 300 million years, they are known for their ability to survive in difficult conditions. They are characterized by their flattened bodies, long antennae, and six legs.

German Cockroach

German cockroaches are one of the most common and troublesome species of cockroaches found in homes and businesses. They’re known for their rapid reproduction rate and adaptability, making them difficult to control once they infest a space. German cockroaches are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. During the day, they typically hide in dark, secluded areas such as behind appliances, inside cabinets, or in cracks and crevices.

American Cockroach

American cockroaches are one of the largest species of cockroaches and are commonly found in homes, especially in warm and humid climates. They are notorious for their resilience and adaptability, which allows them to thrive in a variety of environments. They are commonly found in basements, sewers, kitchens, bathrooms, and trash areas where there is easy access to food and water.

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental cockroaches are a common species of cockroach known for their dark appearance and preference for cool, damp environments. They are often referred to as water bugs because of their attraction to moisture, and while they are not as fast-moving as other cockroach species, they can still cause issues if left unchecked. Oriental cockroaches are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night and tend to hide during the day in dark, secluded areas.

Brown-banded Cockroach

Brown-banded cockroaches are a smaller species of cockroach commonly found in homes and commercial establishments. They are named for the distinctive brown bands that cross their wings and abdomens. Brown-banded cockroaches tend to prefer warmer, drier areas of a building compared to other cockroach species and can be more difficult to control due to their tendency to hide in areas that are harder to access. Brown-banded cockroaches are also nocturnal.

Signs of Cockroach Infestation:

Live or Dead Cockroaches:

Spotting even one cockroach, especially during the day, can indicate an infestation, as they are nocturnal and usually hide, dead cockroaches in cabinets, behind furniture, or near water sources are a warning sign.

Droppings:

Roaches leave behind small, black, pepper-like droppings in areas they frequent, larger cockroaches produce cylindrical, dark brown feces that resemble ground coffee or black rice, they can be found in common locations, behind appliances, in cabinets, along baseboards.

Egg Casings:

Cockroach egg cases are brown, oval-shaped, and ridged, found in hidden areas, under sinks, behind furniture, inside cracks.

Musty Odor:

A strong, musty, oily smell can be present in areas with a heavy infestation, the smell comes from cockroach pheromones and their decomposing bodies.

Shed Skins:

Roaches shed their exoskeleton multiple times as they grow, look for thin, light-brown, shell-like skins in dark corners and moist areas.

Greasy Smear Marks:

Roaches leave dark streaks along walls, floors, or near water sources. Most common in humid areas where they crawl frequently.

Nocturnal Activity & Strange Sounds:

If you turn on the lights at night and see roaches scattering, it’s a clear sign. Some people hear faint rustling or clicking sounds from their hiding spots.

Damage to Food & Materials:

Cockroaches chew through cardboard, paper, plastic, and food packaging. Look for holes or gnaw marks on stored food and crumbs around storage areas.

Preventing Cockroach Infestation

Keep Your Home Clean:

Wipe down countertops & clean up crumbs immediately. Sweep & mop floors regularly to remove food particles.Wash dishes right after eating (don’t leave dirty dishes overnight). Take out the trash daily and use bins with tight-fitting lids. Clean behind and under appliances (stoves, fridges, microwaves) where grease and crumbs collect.

Store Food Properly:

Keep all food in airtight containers (including pet food). Don’t leave fruits & vegetables uncovered, store them in the fridge. Avoid leaving open food or drinks out overnight.

Eliminate Moisture & Fix Leaks:

Fix leaking pipes & faucets (cockroaches need water to survive). Dry out sinks, tubs, and countertops at night. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas like basements. Empty pet water bowls at night.

Seal Entry Points & Hiding Spots:

Seal cracks & crevices in walls, baseboards, and around pipes using caulk. Install door sweeps under doors. Fix damaged window screens & vents. Stuff small holes with steel wool to block access. Reduce clutter (cardboard boxes, newspapers, paper bags) where roaches can hide.

Use Natural Roach Repellents:

Bay leaves & cucumber slices – Place in kitchen corners or cabinets. Diatomaceous earth (DE) – A natural powder that dehydrates and kills roaches (sprinkle near entry points). Peppermint oil & vinegar spray – Repels roaches when sprayed around doors and windows. Borax & sugar mix – A natural bait that dehydrates roaches when consumed.
